I'm Joy McAdams and Kona Wave is all about embracing challenge. We believe that we are "Better Together" and that was the vision for putting on training camps. We have the slogan "Swim All Day" here's the back story. 5 yrs ago at the age of 44 I decided to pursue a growth mindset through physical challenge. I decided to train and run my first marathon on the Big Island of Hawaii. Little did I know that it would change my perspective of life forever. After the race we took a helicopter tour and as we flew over Kailua Bay which is the swim start for the Ironman World Championship, the pilot asked ...What's next? An Ironman? I had no clue what that was,but it seemed to fit into my growthmindset pursuit. Learning to swim was the most intimidating to me. But once again it was a reminder that in order to grow, we need to embrace challenge. Little did I know that this pursuit would lead to a Tedx Talk and ultimately qualifying for multiple Ironman World Championships including coming back to Kailua Bay. I've learned to love what was once my biggest fear.

Thomas graduated from the Curry School of Human Development at The University of Virginia in the Spring of 2021. Thomas earned his B.S. in Kinesiology with emphases in exercise physiology and athletic nutrition.
Growing up in Charlottesville, Virginia, Thomas’ focus was soccer. He played on the Olympic Development Team for the state of Virginia, and on the All-State First Team while he was in high school. While soccer was his primary sport, Thomas also played lacrosse, basketball, golf and tennis in high school.
Thomas chose to pursue academics rather than soccer in college, and eventually found his way to the world of CrossFit. He lifted and trained with a team based out of a local strongman gym in Charlottesville. One of Thomas’ favorite movements in the CrossFit library was rowing on the Erg, and he went on to coach rowing classes for a year as well.
It was not until the Spring of 2020 and the onset of the COVID pandemic that Thomas began his journey into endurance sports. After gyms had closed and exercise classes had shut down, Thomas decided to sign up for a marathon training program, and prepare to run his first marathon in the Fall of 2020. Thomas fell head over heels in love with running, and, at the advice of his running coach, set his sights on qualifying for the Boston Marathon at his first race. Missing the qualification time of three hours by just two minutes at his first event, Thomas immediately signed up for another race in February of 2021 where he broke the three hour barrier and qualified for Boston.
The Spring of 2021 found Thomas preparing to graduate, making arrangements to start his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in the Fall, and of course, training for Boston.
Soon after graduating, Thomas was commuting to work on his bike when a reckless driver blew through a stop sign and sent him flying off of his bike and into the road. He suffered a broken knee, injuries to both ankles and feet, a grade 3 concussion, and damage to his lumbar spine. Thomas couldn’t watch TV or read for months due to the concussion, and went from running 60 miles a week to being unable to get himself off of the couch. After undergoing surgery to repair his knee, Thomas’ physical therapist prescribed swimming as part of his rehabilitation, and Thomas’ road to triathlon began. Thomas did not swim as a child, so the introduction to the pool was a hard and humbling one, but he was quickly taken by the challenge, and dedicated himself to becoming a better swimmer. As his injuries healed and he was able to return to cycling and running, Thomas decided that he wanted to try his hand at triathlon. Thomas found out that a family friend was an endurance coach, and began to train with her in the Summer of 2022. Soon after, Thomas signed up for his first event, 70.3 North Carolina. Flash forward to October of 2022, and Thomas crossed the line in Wilmington with a time of 4 hours and 24 minutes. He won his age group and qualified for the 2023 World Championships in Lahti, Finland.
Thomas spent 2023 racing as an age grouper, and improved quickly across all three sports. After his mother pushed him to follow his dreams of being a professional athlete once again, Thomas decided to defer his entry into PT school, and take a shot at becoming a professional triathlete.
After putting up solid results in 70.3 Boulder and the 70.3 World Championships, Thomas qualified earned his pro card in the Fall of 2023 at 70.3 Augusta, less than a year after his first race in North Carolina.
Since then, Thomas has fully committed himself to the sport of triathlon and all that it demands. He moved to Boulder, Colorado in January of 2024 in order to live with other pros and train in the Mecca of triathlon. In his rookie season, Thomas raced in Oceanside, Maine, Chattanooga, and Boulder, electing to throw himself into the deep end so to speak, and pit himself against the fastest athletes in the world.
In addition to bettering himself as an athlete, Thomas is incredibly passionate about helping others chase their goals and coaching them along the way. He offers insight into the world of professional endurance sports, as well as offers the connections and relationships that come with being a professional athlete, while at the same time is able to understand the struggle of getting into the sport as an adult, and the challenges that come along with that.
The combination of Thomas' education, passion, and connections creates a unique package that very few other coaches are able to offer. He can cater to elite athletes looking to squeeze the last 1% out of their bodies, to those who are returning from injury and need a mentor with a deep understanding of physiology, and to everyone in between.
Our coaching program is unique because it brings an elite athlete like Thomas Inigo alongside Joy McAdams who is a mom to 5, business owner and 5x Ironman Worlds qualifier. She understands the challenge of juggling training and family/work life. Together they understand every aspect of this journey and will help you reach your goals.
